Fitted new front speakers

The front speakers were blow and sounded really rough, a bit like someone farting through a baloon really so something had to be done!

A search on the Hilux surf forum revealed that 4" speakers were a more-or-less direct replacement.
In my younger days I wouldn't have considered anything as meager as a 4" speaker but times change.....................
Anyway, got these from Halfords for £20.00 which seemed a bit of a bargain. THey souded pretty reasonable in the display too.

There's some excellent info here about accessing the speakers. In my Surf though the speakers sit in their own little, ported bass box with foam in as well!
On the passenger side the box comes away with the dashboard and can be easily unscrewed from there. Also, on my Surf, the speaker was attached with conventional spade end connectors.
Unfortunately, I didn't come up with idea to log everything untill halfway through the job so I have no pictures of the bass box removed which is easy on the passenger side but doesn't need to be removed drivers side.

THis pic shows the dash dropped and the old speaker in position. When removing it, undo the lower screw first as its easier to get to before the top one is removed.

Old speaker dangling, you can see the foam and the front of the bass-box.

Shiny new speaker to fit

And, in position. The original speaker has 2 mounting screws, these pioneers use 4. I just used 2 holes and it holds it really securely which is obviously inportant in fitting speakers. The 2 holes just about line up (with a bit of imagination) and make it an easy swap.

This is the old speaker removed. It didn't actually seem to be blown, I wonder if those bits of broken-down material inside weere causing the rattling noise.

The difference in sound quality now is amazing. I don't know what the rear speakers are but I'd imagine they're aftermarket ones as they sound fine if not a bit flat.
With these new front ones, although my cars never going to grace the front cover of "Bass Junkies Monthly" you can now enjoy the stereo which you couldn't before.

Bought 16th December 2007

From "Codlord" on the hilux surf forum.

Took it to Autoserice in Maidstone for a service and to check for a suspected failed wheel bearing as it was quite noisy.

Turned out all the bearings were fine, the noise was from the tyres!

He didn't service it wither as he said it had been done very recently.

Codlord said in the ad it was recently serviced so it was nice to have that confirmed.

Wales 2007/08

Took it to wales on holiday over the new Year. It performed faultlessly, comfortable and plenty of room. It was a slower journey than in the Audi, took 5 hours instead of 4 and fuel consumption was 25.9mpg at 55-65mph. Didn't use a drop of oil though!

We also drove up into the mountains on some of the tracks which was good fun

All in all very pleased with it, it is a bit juicy but we knew that to start with.
